A single layer forming fabric is the least complex of the weave pattern categories and the 4, 5 shaft and 8 shaft configurations are still widely used in the paper making industry. And single layer forming fabrics are also applied in the manufacturing of multi-layer forming fabrics due to their good paper sheet forming properties.

A single layer forming fabric has the simplest weave pattern. It is composed by one CD yarn and one MD yarn system. Single layer forming fabrics can be woven into various patterns for different performance and applications.

Single layer forming fabrics woven in four shed are multipurpose and provide good stretch, drainage, sheet, support and abrasion resistance properties. They are mainly used to produce printing & writing papers, packaging papers.

Single layer forming fabrics with five shed weave structure provide better stretch and drainage properties than 4-shaft forming fabrics. The retention can be improved by increasing weft yarns. This kind of forming fabrics are primarily used on tissue machines.

The eight shed single layer forming fabrics are the most wear-resistant ones in single layer forming fabrics and generally used for the production of kraft papers, fluting & test liner papers, card boards.
